Shanan Tutorials

Shanan Tutorials is an instructor-led, drop off program for homeschool families. Our courses are college preparatory, maintaining high academic standards.   We want young people to succeed not only at this level, but also in the next stage of life whether it’s college, career, military, missionary, or marriage. Our goal is for the students enjoy the fellowship of other home schooled students in a structured environment. We take these courses seriously (although we can also have fun learning!) and expect the students to do the same.

Our desire is to keep the classes small (8-12) in order to achieve personal attention. We desire each teen to profit academically and socially from this learning opportunity. Due to the needs and interests of the home school community, honors level courses are being offered for students who can meet the rigorous requirements.  Whether college or career bound, all students need a good education from a Biblical worldview.

The courses and tutors do not replace the parent as the primary teacher. Each student is expected to complete the homework outside of class time and be prepared to participate in class. Parents are expected to follow up to make sure the student is accomplishing the required homework.

Shanan is for families who have homeschooled for at least one school year. It is not a good fit for families who simply want to turn over responsibility of overseeing their student’s progress to someone else, nor for families that simply want to check the courses off their list. We require students to work hard and be monitored closely by their parents.

Utilizing Shanan Tutorials as a supplement to the home school experience affords many benefits. Because we want the students to succeed, we promote good study skills within the classes. By teaching them to be responsible for keeping up with the class assignments, we promote ownership of education by the student. Study skills are reinforced by the tutors.  All students can benefit from the strategies of becoming more responsible and organized!

Course Information

 

Classes available to 7th & 8th grade students: Pre- Algebra, Algebra I, General Science, Physical Science, Essay Writing & Grammar, Writing for Muggles, and Geography

Parents are welcome to use the course descriptions from the above subject to assist them in presenting this information to higher education schools.

Courses designated with Honors status are available in two different formats:

  • Honors level (Grammar and Composition)
  • Honors option within a regular course

Be sure to discuss the Honors option with your tutor.

Our textbooks are carefully selected to offer quality material for the students.

  • We recommend supporting our local vendor, The Homeschool Room, for many of these products.
  • Books can also be purchased used on the internet or new through Rainbow Resource catalog, Christianbook.com or a catalog of your choice.
  • Math texts are available to rent through your Shanan tutor because they are previous editions and not readily located, or it is simply easier to rent and return.
  • Some of the materials are supplied by the tutor to the student at no cost other than a replacement fee, if necessary.

Credits: the parent-teacher may list the courses for credit as they wish on their student’s transcript. The amount of the credit is not negotiable due to the amount of work, but some classes could fall in different categories, so the credit areas listed with each course are suggestions only.

Requirements

To help the Tutorials run smoothly and for the student to benefit from these classes, we ask that parents and students agree to abide by a few requirements. Basically, we ask that the students take these courses seriously and do the homework required by the tutor. This includes being willing to do their best to fulfill the assignments given by the tutor, and be prepared for class. We expect good behavior in the classroom and modest neat attire. Naturally, we expect respect for the tutor, fellow students, and the church where we meet.

Parents need to evaluate the class material for a worldview perspective from which the tutor may present. Payments for materials and fees need to be made promptly.

We do not take the place of the parent as the primary teacher and therefore require the parents to be actively involved. Since our courses meet on a limited basis, they require follow-up at home under the direction of the parent. It is our desire to comply with the laws of North Carolina which now state that tutors are a source that home school parents may use. To ensure parental involvement, parents will be asked to sign various forms indicating the monitoring of a quiz or test, or verifying completion of homework supervised at home.

Many of our courses require communicating with the instructors, so it is necessary for the students to have their own email address and access to the internet. Some courses also use Google Classroom. 

If at any time a teen is continually disobedient or fails to do the assignments required by the tutors and they feel it is not beneficial for the student to remain in the class, the Shanan Board reserves the right to ask a student to discontinue the Tutorial program without refund.
